We all know that to get anywhere in life you have to take the first step. Your first step will always be the DECISION to make a move. Sounds simple enough but this is truly where a lot of people get hung up. This very first step is what holds people back from reaching their goals. Why? A real decision takes commitment. You must be committed to the idea. You must believe that no matter what, you will do everything in your power to succeed. Now, you can’t force this kind of determination. We will lose weight, quit smoking or whatever when we have reached a point when we tell ourselves “That’s Enough.” At that point you have already succeeded. Because with real determination some measure of success is guaranteed. It may not be exactly what you initially thought success would look like but you will make considerable strides forward.

When I decided to get into the adult webmaster business I did so with full conviction and determination. It wasn’t a half hearted thought. Once I was sure this is what I wanted to do I wrote out my original goals and expectations and worked backwards to find out what I needed to do to get there. Or at least what I thought I needed to do. You see, this is a completely different field of business for me compared to what I spent over 20 years doing. Now, while I knew I had a lot to learn about being a webmaster and promoting ANYTHING on the internet, let alone adult material, I also knew there were some basic facts about any business that I had to take care of if I were going to give this a real chance at success.

Firstly, I want to make it clear that this article describes MY course of action over time and in no way is meant to suggest that you follow the same course. For the record please consult an attorney to help determine the best course of action for your individual circumstances.

My first step was to apply to trademark the name Footman. The application is in and now I wait for up to 18 months for the complete process. Don’t ask me why it takes so long, it’s a government agency, enough said. Next, I applied for a fictitious name or DBA, Footman Enterprises. I did this because it’s a much faster way to present myself in a more professional manner than starting a corporation. I intend to incorporate in the near future as my business grows.

Now I poured over the search engine results for adult webmasters forums and found a few really great places… Cozy Campus, Zipped Sites Forum, AWI and Klixx. I went in and introduced myself as a NOOB and started to get a feel for how things work both in the forums and with the biz. I asked a lot of questions and I’m still asking questions. These places are full of very knowledgeable people most of whom have been in the internet business for a very long time. I’ve gained an immeasurable amount of knowledge in these forums in such a short time.

What I first learned in the forums is how much I didn’t know! I had to learn some basic HTML and CSS. I site I used to learn the very basics of HTML is Adults RSS. This free website take you through the basic steps to build a website. To get a decent overview of what HTML is, this site is perfect. I also found and use W3Schools, which has to be the most comprehensive FREE site to learn just about everything you need to know about the internet. Between these two sites and my new found friends in the forums, I’m learning a great deal and have already put up a few sites. See the side bar for the links to my other sites.

What ever you decide to do in life do so with conviction and determination. Take the first steps with confidence and soak in everything you need to help you succeed. Plan your work and work your plan. Go now… and take those all important FIRST STEPS.
