What Is Pornography?
Merriam-Webster defines Pornography as follows:
- the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement
- material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement
- the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction
Firstly, I believe the word unfortunately carries a derogatory tone with it. In most conversations and writings of a professional nature, I generally prefer to say Adult Material. I do refer to Porn/Porno when speaking in a relaxed setting among friends. Kind of a ‘slang’ term. I also think that as adults who enjoy “adult material,” the more we refer to it as pornography, the more we play into the hands of those who have labeled it in a negative way. The more we present ourselves in an adult and professional manner, as a whole, the more we are seen that way by the world. And in doing so remove the “taboo” from it.
To me “Porn” refers to the depiction of adult sexual behavior. What I do with my “special” friends doesn’t fit the definition of pornography until I put it on camera or film and SHARE it with others. (don’t ask…lol)
Be that as it may, “pornography” does serve a purpose if only to provide a fantasy world, no different than mainstream movies and books, where one can safely enjoy and explore their own private desires without subjecting others to it, far from the judgmental eyes of anyone who feels differently. Let’s face it, aside from the puritanical, right wing, ultra-conservatives, there are plenty of judgmental people out there. Besides, what works for me may not work for you and it’s not my place or duty to convince you that my way is better.
I see the road we as a people are moving towards and it disturbs me. As a society we are becoming more distant and closed minded. In many ways we are not “growing” as a whole. We spend more and more time on computers, cell phones, PDA’s etc and we lose the humanity that is so very important to the growth of us as a race. It’s much easier to be UNaccepting of something when we’re detached from it. Meet the people face to face… talk with them and get to know them. Try to understand their point of views and why they have them. Who are they and how are they different? How are they similar? Does it really matter if they don’t think like us? Really.
Pornography is a word. That’s all. What people attribute to that word or how they judge that word will make all the difference. Is it wrong to watch, read or otherwise enjoy “pornography?” No, it’s not. It’s simply a venue to explore one of the most primal and natural instincts of the human race… Namely SEX. Sex is not dirty, wrong, immoral or anything else. It’s probably the most natural part of what we are. Don’t be close minded about sex or your sexual desires. Explore them in a reasonable, adult and legal manner. We can celebrate our sexuality and discover new horizons of stimulation and ecstasy and be better for it.
